Future Perfect Tense

Definition: The future perfect tense is used to describe an action or event that will be completed at some point in the future before another specific future time or event. This tense is used to indicate the completion of an action before a specific time in the future. It is formed by using the helping verb “will have” or “shall have” and past participle (3rd form of the verb).

Formula For Future Perfect Tense

Positive Sentence:

Subject+will/shall+have+verb 3rd form


Examples:

  • She will have completed her project before night.
  • They will have reached their home.

Negative Sentence:

Subject+will/shall+not+have+verb 3rd form


Examples:

  • He will not have completed his assignment, you should give him more time.
  • The train will not have come now. 

Interrogative Sentence:

Will/Shall+subject+verb 3rd form+?


Examples:

  • Will you have attended the class before 12PM?
  • Will they have traveled to five different countries by the end of the year?

Uses of Future Perfect Tense

a) Actions Completed Before a Future Time: The primary use of the future perfect tense is to express actions that will be finished before a certain point in the future.

Examples:

  • By the time he arrives, I will have prepared dinner.
  • They will have completed the project by next month.

b) To Predict or Speculate About the Past: Sometimes, the future perfect tense is used to speculate or predict past actions from the perspective of the future.

Examples:

  • She'll wonder why we didn't call her.
  • He'll regret not taking the opportunity.

c) To Narrate in the Future: In storytelling or narratives, the future perfect tense can be used to set the stage for past events that will be discussed later.

  • The year is 2050, and by 2070, humans will have colonized Mars.
  • After a few years, the nature will have changed everything

d) Talk About Achievements: The future perfect tense can be used to talk about accomplishments or achievements that will be reached in the future.

Examples:

  • By the end of the year, they will have saved enough money to buy a house.
  • He will have earned his master's degree by the time he turns 30.
