Past Continuous Tense

Definition: The past continuous tense is used to describe an action that was ongoing or persisted in the past but eventually came to an end in the past. This tense is used to represent activities or events that were ongoing or in progress at a certain point in the past. The past continuous tense is also known as the past progressive tense. It is formed by using the helping verb “was” or “were” and the present participle (4th form of the verb).

Formula For Past Continuous Tense


Positive Sentence:

Subject+was/were+verb 4th form


Examples:

  • I was driving a car. (Main gari chala raha tha.)
  • She was sitting on a bed. (Wo bed pe bethi hui thi.)
  • He was reading a book. (Wo kitab parh raha tha.)

Negative Sentence:

Subject+was/were+not+verb 4th form


Examples:

  • She was not waiting for you. (Wo tumhara intezar nahi kar rahi thi.)
  • We were not going there. (Wo wahan nahi ja rahe the.)
  • You were not listening to me. (Tum meri bat nahi sun rahi thi.)

Interrogative Sentence:

Was Were+subject+Verb 4th form


Examples:

  • Were you coming here? (Kya tum wahan ja rahe they?)
  • Was he writing a letter? (Kya wo chithi likh rah tha?)
  • Were they using the computer? (Kya wo computer istemaal kar rahe the?)


Uses of Past Continuous Tense


a) Actions in Progress in the Past (Bhootkaal/Maazi ke Jaari Kaam):

It is used to describe the actions that were happening at a specific point in the past. This tense helps set the scene or provide background information.

Examples:

  • I was studying when the phone rang.
  • They were playing soccer when it started raining.
  • She was cooking dinner at 7 PM yesterday.

b) Simultaneous Actions in the Past (Bhootkaal/Maazi ke Ek Waqt Me Kaam):

The past continuous tense is used to describe two or more actions that were happening at the same time in the past.

Examples:

  • While I was studying, my brother was watching TV.
  • They were talking on the phone while I was working on my laptop.

c) Interrupted Actions (Madakhlati Kaam):

It can be used to describe an action that was interrupted by another action in the past.

  • She was reading a book when the phone suddenly rang.
  • I was cooking when I realized I had run out of salt.

d) Background Information in Narratives (Kahani ke Piche Ka Manzar):

When telling stories or narrating events in the past, the past continuous tense is used to provide background information and describe what was happening at the time.

  • As they walked through the forest, the leaves were rustling in the breeze.

e) Expressing Politeness and Softening Statements (Narmi se bayan Dena):

In some cases, the past continuous tense is used to soften or make statements more polite, especially when asking for or offering something.

f) Expressing Duration (Dauraniya Batana):

It can be used to express the duration of an action that was ongoing in the past.

g) Expressing Parallel Actions in the Past (Maazi ke Ek Saath Huey Kaamo Ko Batana):

When describing parallel actions or events in the past, the past continuous tense can be used.

Examples:

  • While he was studying for the exam, his friends were playing video games.
  • They were traveling around Europe, meeting new people and experiencing different cultures.
