Definition of Past Indefinite Tense

The past indefinite tense, which is also known as the past simple tense, is used to talk about actions that happened in the past and were finished before the time you're speaking about. We use this tense when we want to describe something that occurred at a specific time in the past. It's all about telling stories or discussing events from the past. It is formed by using past simple (2nd form of the verb) without helping verb, while making negative or interrogative sentences the helping verb "did" is used with basic form (1st form of the verb.

The past Indefinite tense is also used in State sentences. The linking verbs "was" or "were" are used to form state sentences of this tense.

Definition of Past Indefinite Tense in Hindi/Urdu

Past Indefinite tense ko past simple tense bhi kaha jata hai. Ye tense hame un kaamo ke bare me batata hai jo bhootkaal ya maazi me shuru huey aur ye baat likhne ya batane se pehle mukammal hogaye. Ye tense hum tab use karte hen jab hum un waqiaat ki baat kar rahe hon jo bhootkaal ya maazi  ke kisi khaas waqt me huey hon. Past simpe tense ka jumla (sentence) banane ke liye verb ki past simple form use hoti hai aur koi helping verb istemaal nahi hota. Manfi (negative) ya sawalia (interrogative) sentence banane ke liye heplping verb "did"istemaal hota hai aur verb ki basic form istemaal hoti hai.
Past indefinite tense state sentences me bhi istemaal hota hai iske liye "was" ya "were" linking verb istemaal hote hen.

Formula for Past Simple Tense

1. Positive Sentence:


Action Subject + Verb 2nd form


Examples: 

  • I went to school yesterday. (Main kal school gaya tha) 

  • He ate an apple. (Us ne ek saib khaya)

  • Jason won the race. (Jason race jeet gaya)


State:    Subject + was/were + noun/pronoun/adjective

Examples: 

  • She was busy (Wo masroof thi)

  • They were my guests. (Wo mere mehmaan they)

  • You were right about that. (Tum uske bare mein sahi they)


2. Negative Sentence:

Action: Subject + did + not +  Verb 1st form


Examples:

  • I did not do my homework. (main ne apna homework nahi kiya)

  • She did not finish her breakfast. (Usne apna nashta khatam nahi kiya)

  • They did not know about me. (Wo mere bare me nahi jante they)


State:    Subject + was/were + not + noun/pronoun/adjective

Examples:

  • He was not happy yesterday. (Wo kal khush nahi thi)

  • They were not sad about that. (Wo uske bare me udaas nahi they)

  • I was not at home last night. (Main kal raat ghar pe nahi tha)


3. Interrogative Sentence: 

Action: Did + Subject + verb 1st form+? 


Examples:

  • Did you complete your work? (Kya tum ne apna kaam pura karliya?)

  • Did she see me? (Kya usne mujhe dekha?

  • Did he watch that movie? (Kya usne movie dekhi?)


State: Was/Were + subject + noun/pronoun/adjective +?

Examples:

  • Were your parents sad at that time? (Kya us waqt tumhare parents udaas they?)

  • Was he there last week? (Kya wo pichle hafte wahan tha?)

  • Were you happy there? (Kya tum wahan khush they?


Uses of Past Indefinite tense:

a) Completed Actions (Mukammal Kaam)

The past simple tense is often used to talk about actions or events that happened and ended in the past. 

Examples:

  • She walked to the store yesterday.

  • They visited Paris last summer.

  • He ate pizza last night.

  • We went to school in the morning.


b) To Sequence Past Actions (Bhootkaal/Maazi ke Tarteebwar Kaam): 

It is used to indicate the order of past events or actions. You can use it to show which action happened first, second, and so on

Examples:

  • I woke up, brushed my teeth, and had breakfast.

  • He arrived at the party, greeted everyone, and then sat down.

  • You came, shook my hand, and went.

  • She cooked the food, served it on the table, and invited all family members.


c) Past Habits (Maazi ki Aadatein): 

The past simple tense can be used to describe past habits or regular actions that are no longer true. 

Examples:


  • She always went for a run in the morning.

  • He played daily in childhood.

  • They scolded their children every time.

  • I came to this town often.


d) To Narrate Stories or Events (Qissa ya Kahani Sunane Ke Liye): 

When telling a story or recounting a series of events in the past, the past simple tense is commonly used to provide a clear timeline. 

Examples:


  • Once upon a time, there lived a princess in a beautiful castle.

  • I saw a shooting star while I was camping last weekend.

  • She was very shy as a child.

  • He did not like apples before.
